Dogwood Scholarship Applications are now Available!

If you have taken a concentration of 4 or more courses in the following areas over your grade 11 and 12 year and hope to pursue a career or post secondary education in one of these areas, please come and pick up an application form from Mrs. Da Silva in room 303

Fine Arts (Visual, Dance, Drama Music)
Applied Skills (Business Ed, Computers, Home Ec, Cooking or Culinary ACE-It)
Physical Activity
Secondary Language (taken more than two languages)
Technology and Trade (Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Construction, Auto body etc or have been in any of the Tran and Trades programs (formally ACE-It)
Community Service (more than 300 hours of service and some leadership course) plan on pursing a degree in a field such as psychology, nursing, teaching social work etc)
Indigenous Studies: students of indigenous decent who contribute to their school and community and highly active in their indigenous community

Must maintain a 2.5 GPA

Kemper Foundation Essay Contest Scholarship

ESSAY CONTEST $1000 and $500 Prizes

 This year the Kemper Human Rights Education Foundation (khref.org) is offering a first prize of $1000 and second prize of $500 to high school students who are citizens and residents of countries other than the United States judged to have written the best answers to the following question:

Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations, said, “hate is moving into the mainstream – in liberal democracies and authoritarian states alike.”* Others, such as Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, the former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, claim that intolerance manifested in religious extremism, xenophobia, racism, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, misogyny, homophobia, and hatred of immigrants, is on the rise.
** Do you agree that one or more of these forms of intolerance is or are on the rise in the world, in your country in particular, or both? If so what do you think are the causes and implications of the rise and how do you think it should be addressed? If you disagree, explain the reason you disagree.

Deadline: The deadline for submissions is December 10, 2019 (Human Rights Day).

 Criteria: Essays should be between 1000 and 2500 words and include a cover page with the: title of the essay, author’s name, name and address of the high school, name of a teacher or administrator at the high school, author’s grade level, date submitted, and the following statement signed by the author and author’s parent or guardian:

 “I give the Kemper Human Rights Education Foundation permission to publish this essay.” Essays will be judged according to how clearly and well they answer the question posed and the extent to which they are supported by research.

Loran Scholarship is Here

The big on is here! The Loran Scholarship is a cross Canada scholarship that helps take amazing students who no only show strong academics but have leadership, compassion and resililence.

Cariboo will be sponsoring three students for the Sponsored pool of Candidates, but all the rest of the Grads can apply to the DIRECT POOL.

The Loran Scholars Foundation is beginning its search for the 31st class of Loran Scholars, and we need help to identify students who demonstrate strength of character, dedication to serving others in the community, and the promise of leadership potential. 

The individuals we seek possess integrity, courage, compassion, intellectual curiosity, as well as a high level of personal autonomy and self-motivation.

Valued at up to $100,000, the Loran Award includes study at one of our 25 partner universities, summer internships, mentorship, and participation in a community of supporters and alumni working towards a better country and world. 


Students may now access our online application system at apply.loranscholar.ca. They can also view a sample application form.

Here are the steps to sponsor candidates:

Candidates wishing to be sponsored must select Sponsored by (or seeking sponsorship from) my school in the online application, and then enter the name and email address of the designated school contact in the Educational Background section.
 
Every candidate must designate a referee, whether they end up in the sponsored or direct pool. The candidate needs to finalize their part of the online application in order to have the reference request email sent. The reference word limit is 250 words.
 
Once the reference has been submitted, the school contact will receive an email allowing them to log in and confirm whether or not the student is being sponsored by the school. The online sponsorship form takes about 2 minutes to complete.

Important Dates:

The deadline for school sponsored applications is October 17th, 2019 at 8:00pm (Eastern Time). Each high school may sponsor up to three students.
